"What's Not Digital?" Paintings by Durham artist, Maria Falbo
"This collection of paintings explores my analog1 experience and its digital2 representation in a broad and metaphorical sense. What’s not digital? asks what is lost or gained when experience is represented, reconstructed, and remembered digitally.
Digitizing requires sampling the original content according to some rule (whose rule?). Digitizing requires leaving out or changing a good bit of the original content (who chooses what to leave out?). Digitizing is a way of systematically losing information (forgetting, omitting, editing) – so that the original content is often lost forever and what remains is a version of reality."
1 Analog - of, relating to, or being a mechanism in which data is represented by continuously variable physical quantities. Anything that happens on a continuous spectrum requires an infinite number of infinitesimal pieces of information to record.
2 Digital - relating to or being a mechanism in which data is represented in discrete numerical form (especially 0 and 1). Digitizing chunks the continuous into a finite number of same-sized, discrete units.
